2014 Quilters Dream Catcher

Here are some photos of the Quilters Dream Catcher as I am working on it. I had taken a lot of photos in the process. But I must have deleted them. The first one is finished with the border on. Then I began to quilt it. Gizmo is laying on it as I am adding the crystals. Mom took the picture of me holding it when she was here for Em's graduation. And then the last photo I took before I sent it off to the contest.

Moon Quilter wind chime

This is a wind chime that Emma gave me for my birthday. It goes great in my sewing room.

2014 Sewing Room

So this year I actually have a sewing room. After painting the room for the first time in 20 years I moved everything into the new sewing room. Other Hoffman entries are hanging on the walls to keep me motivated.

Hoffman Challenge 2014

This year I decided to make a feather star for my Hoffman Challenge. I bought the Marsha McCloskey Feathered Star books and ruler. I made the star in one day. Each half square triangle measures one inch finished. I had to sew this star together on my Singer Feather weight machine as it had to be a precise scant 1/4 inch seam on every seam to fit together correctly. Having the ruler really made the difference. The hardest part was going through my stash of fabric to find fabric that would work with the challenge fabric. The blue was a comp fabric to the challenge fabric. The rest of the fabric was batiks from my stash. I bought a yard of the challenge fabric and a yard of the blue fabric. Every other fabric I already had in my stash. The yellow fabric was a fossil fern fabric that I have owned for over decade. I felt that the yellow area was way too large of a area of one color. At this point I decided to hand quilt the quilt and to showcase my hand quilting in the yellow area. I quilted circles and flowers around the star. I did one at a time using two different templates and chalk. I do not use a hoop I free hand quilt sitting in my recliner with my feet up. There are weeks of evening TV listening as I quilted this challenge. I guess it worked as I was awarded Best hand workmanship in pieced quilts. I did not pay for the judges comments this year as last years judge was so critical of my work I decided to for go that pain. Now I wish I had paid for the comments. I admit I have two points that are cut short and I really believed that was enough to not even get excepted. To my surprise it did not seem to matter. I also applied little fabric flowers over existing flowers in the border. And crystals in the center of the circles and the flowers.  Just for fun.

The top photo is at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival in Colorado.

The second is a page from the Hoffman Book of the traveling quilts, clothes, dolls and other items.
Yes I am excited to have been excepted to have a quilt to travel and to have won a top prize

Houston Quilt Festival

Houston Quilt Festival has started. My "Bruno is in Hoffman Heaven" is in Houston. He is in the collection "Its raining cats and dogs". Waiting for Trudy to take a photo for me. Wish I could be there but Bruno has been to more quilt shows than me.

I have posted photos of my 2013 Hoffman Challenge.

The post office misplaced the quilt but after a week it was delivered to Windsor Colorado. Now we wait to see if it excepted in this years challenge. It has been a fun quilt to do.

The Hobbit in Hoffman

For the Hoffman 2013 Challenge I went a new direction. I choose a book cover of a book I received as a gift in 1972. I always found this book cover to be interesting to me as it has a sun and a moon on it. So I decided I was going to do my interpretation of this picture. I would make the fabric work. Most of the fabric used is Hoffman. I cut the leaves to make the trees at the bottom. I twisted silk ribbon to make the tree trunks. I need to quilt it and add the embellishments. Beads, crystals dragon before it is finished. Then submit it and wait to see.
